Fat Daddy’s has two entrances. We happened to go in the back as it was pretty hard to find the entrances. Once we found it, the place was busy. The waitress let us know as we were seated that they were out of a few items on the menu: burnt ends and smoked devil eggs
After looking over the menu, there were some dressed up usuals that you’d expect to find at a BBQ joint: beans, Mac and cheese, hushpuppies, etc. Now I spent the majority of my life in Kansas City, so I know and love BBQ. I was very skeptical to try this this place, but Kellyne found it and I didn’t have to decide on a place, so it was a solid choice. The dining room was small and there was a full bar available with a lot of local options. Our waitress came back and answered all of our questions regarding the food and we finally placed our order.
Kellyne ordered the pulled pork with a six cheese Mac and cheese and jalapeño hushpuppies. Autumn ordered the brisket with chili garlic beans and jalapeño hushpuppies. I ordered the chicken with red bliss potato salad and the cornbread.
The chicken was super moist. It had a lot of herbs that coated the skin when it was smoked. The chicken itself was flavorful and very tender, not dry at all. The BBQ sauce wasn’t my favorite and that chicken could have been so much better with a different type of sauce. BUT, every single person will judge a bbq sauce different and I am absolutely one who prefers the tomato based Kansas City style of bbq over other varieties. The potato salad was a bit bland and could have used an acidic additive, like mustard, but it was decent. The cornbread was their signature cornbread and stated that you wouldn’t need butter or honey to accompany it, they were right. It was very buttery and had a sweet honey flavor already infused into it. The brisket was pretty standard but wasn’t super impressive. The jalapeño hushpuppies were great texture and flavor. Not too spicy and not dry. The beans were great and Autumn really enjoyed their garlicy spicy flavor. The Mac and cheese was pretty good and you could tell it had several different cheeses in it to create the flavor profile. The pulled pork was alright and not dry.
Personally, with the right sauce, these meat items could have been even better, but alone they were pretty good. This was a nice surprise as usually bbq places aren’t super impressive since I’m pretty biased. I would have loved to try the items that weren’t available due to selling out, but there’s always next time. If you like bbq and enjoy very tender and juicy meat, give this place a try. Their sides are pretty great too.
