Fudge making class! That’s what we signed up for. I shouldn’t have been surprised to find it was a 30-60 min class which wasn’t about making fudge, it was about flavoring fudge to different types based on personal preference. It was pretty neat and a very smart business model. The class was tucked in a room behind the front of the shop, which had some neat stuff in that little shop and their fudge was good.
Our teacher gave us the options for our base (milk, white, or dark chocolate) and began explaining the process of how we were going to mix our fudges up. I was slightly disappointed because I wanted to learn the entire process. Now, I make fudge at home, but I enjoy classes that teach you something new and it looked like a neat opportunity. Still, a great business concept. I can imagine younger kids going crazy with the flavor options and creativity potential in this class.
Autumn, Kellyne, and myself all selected the milk chocolate base. We were shown the mix in options, the extract spray bottles, and were told to pick whatever combinations we wanted. The front of the shop was an actual fudge shop that sold tons of creative flavored fudges that you won’t find on the mainland due to the unique ingredients Hawaii has to offer. Kellyne was by far the more adventurous of the three of us with her flavorings. I went safe with a milk chocolate base, vanilla extract, rum extract, and crushed macadamia nuts. Autumn went for more of an almond joy type of fudge with a milk chocolate base, dark chocolate melted in, crushed almonds, shredded coconut, and coconut extract. Kellyne decided to go with a much more unique flavor combination. It was a cross between a s’more and a toffee blended fudge.
Really the entire making process was a heated base that we stirred in our ingredients and adjusted the flavor to our preferences with the extracts and additives. It was fun. You could get very crazy with the combinations, or the teacher could guide you through common flavor combinations.
We were given custom boxes for our fudge to set up in. We then got to pick which Hawaiian God or Goddess photo to add to our box. Once we had selected our picture to add to our box, we were then told to remove ourselves from the room and to line up in the other room for our graduation. Yes, we had a graduation with PhD in fudgology. Full of diploma reading and acceptances. It was hilarious and silly and capped off a unique experience.
The class was fun. It wasn’t what I was expecting, which thinking back on it, that was silly to expect for a small shop with daily classes for fudge making. More of a create your own flavored fudge. It really is something I would suggest people try if you want to learn a little bit about fudge, but mostly be creative and get to walk away with your own flavored fudge AND a slab of fudge from the store front.
