Coconuts was recommended to us by one of Kellyne’s students. It was located in a strip mall and seemed to be relatively busy. We walked up to the counter and stared at the menu to determine what we were going to order. The staff greeted us and asked if it was our first time coming there. When we responded yes, we were told that they were known for their fish tacos and the grilled ono on a bun was also highly recommended.

We ended up ordering the fish tacos, the fish and chips, and the coconut shrimp to share amongst the 3 of us. We sat down on tables and benches that were shaped like surf boards and they were really different and unique. The interior was very clean and very the staff were super friendly. It didn’t take long for our food to come out and during that time a staff member came up and made small talk with us and again, was super friendly and welcoming.

The coconut shrimp came with a sweet and spicy sauce. It was absolutely fried to perfection. It tasted like they made the shrimp there with more coconut than a batter and the coconut was fresh and fried to order. The fish taco was a combination of grilled ono and grilled mahi-mahi. It came loaded with coleslaw and a mango salsa on top. I’m not a huge fan of mangos and I asked if it could be put on the side. They said yes but said to try it the way it was intended, so I did. They were right. It was absolutely fantastic. Seriously, so so good. The fish and chips were two fish pieces, ono and mahi-mahi, and they were fantastic as well. The fish was also perfectly fried, not greasy at all and maintained awesome crunch. The coleslaw and the tarter sauce were the perfect accompaniment and the tarter sauce was very different but very good. Each fish was different and each fish was great. The fries were also fried perfectly. It was a lot of fried, but that’s what fish and chips are, so the fish tacos were a welcomed bit of freshness.

I was seriously impressed with all of this food. It was absolutely one of our favorites. We would go back just for the fish tacos. I cannot speak more highly about this place, it was that impressive and I don’t say that often. There are a lot of locations and I just hope they continue to expand. Go here. It’s an absolute must and any time we return to Maui or another location that is where we’re at, we will go again to see if it’s just as good as this original location.
